4 tips for staying active during a vacation

We all know how challenging it can be to maintain your fitness level while on holiday. TrainAway has 4 tips for you to use to stay healthy the next time you’re on the road.

Staying active when you’re away from home can be a hassle, and more often than not it means an unwanted interruption of your workout routine. In the worst case, falling out of your active routine can cause you to lose progress AND make it exponentially more difficult for you to get back into the swing of things when your trip is over.

Here are 4 tips from TrainAway that you can use to stay active during your next vacation:

Plan your workouts in advance

In planning your trip you should make sure to include on what days and at what time of day you’ll work out. It’s a slippery slope from telling yourself, “I’ll just figure it out when I get there” to not making your workouts happen at all. There will be a million other activities clamoring for your time and attention when you get to your new destination. Writing down a workout schedule in advance will both help you avoid temptation and increase the chances that you actually stick to it.

Mix it up

Traveling is a break from the routines of your everyday life, and this should be reflected in your workouts. Mix it up by trying a new regimen with more or less cardio or weights than normal, or target other muscle groups that you usually don’t focus on. Use your time in a new setting to experiment with new ways of working out – you might just discover something you love and are excited to incorporate into your routine when you get back home.

Short and sweet

Get in, get on it, and get out! One of the biggest hurdles for travelers to overcome is prioritizing exercise. Either you have a busy schedule during a business trip or you’re eager to explore your new destination on a holiday. So allow your workouts and gym time to reflect that. Stick to 45 minutes to an hour max in the gym, and then get on with your exciting day. You’ll feel better for having gone to the gym, but not like you wasted a big part of your trip spending hours on the treadmill.

Find the right gym in advance

Saving the biggest hurdle for last – the gyms themselves. One bad gym experience and your motivation to work out during your trip is gone. Do your research from home using the TrainAway app to find a great gym near where you’re staying. That way when you get to your destination half the work is already done for you – all you have to do is show up and work out.
