4 tips for keeping healthy when traveling

We’ve all experienced the challenges of staying in shape when traveling. TrainAway has 4 pieces of advice for you to use to stay active the next time you’re away from home.

Keeping active when you travel can be annoying, and frequently it means an unwelcome interruption of your regular fitness routine. Worst-case scenario, getting out of your active habit can result in a loss of progress AND increased difficulty in getting back into the gym-going habit once you’re back home.

Here are 4 pieces of advice from TrainAway for you to use to stay active the next time you’re away from home:

Schedule your workouts in advance

When it comes to organizing your trip you should make sure to include on what days as well as at what time you’ll get to the gym. It’s a slippery slope from telling yourself, “I’ll figure it out when I arrive” to just not making into the gym at all. There will be a million other things competing for your time and attention when you arrive at your destination. Creating a workout schedule for your trip in advance will improve the odds that you actually stick to it and help you avoid the temptation of ignoring the gym altogether.

Change things up

Traveling is a break from the routines of your everyday life, and this should be mirrored in your workouts. Switch it up by trying a new routine with more or less cardio or weight training than usual, or prioritize other muscle groups that you usually don’t make time for. Use your time in a new venue to experiment with other ways of working out – you might just stumble upon something you love and look forward to incorporating into your routine when you get back home.

Short and sweet

Get in, get on it, and get out! One of the most significant challenges for travelers to overcome is prioritizing workouts. Maybe you have a packed schedule during a business trip or you’re excited to experience your new destination on vacation. So plan your time in the gym accordingly. Limit yourself to 45 minutes to an hour maximum in the gym, and then get out and about. You’ll feel virtuous for having gone to the gym, but not like you wasted a huge part of your trip spending hours lifting weights.

Find the right gym for you ahead of time

Saving the biggest obstacle for last – the gyms themselves. One bad gym experience and your motivation to exercise during your trip evaporates. Do your research from home in advance using the TrainAway app to find a great gym near where you’ll be staying. That way when you arrive half the work is already done – all you have to do is show up and work out!
