Organize your workouts ahead of time

When organizing your trip, ensure you also think about when you’ll go to the gym. It’s a slippery slope from promising yourself that you’ll just figure it out when you land to not stepping foot inside a gym once during your trip. There will be hundreds of other exciting things to do when you arrive at your destination, and making time to go to the gym will seem low on the list of priorities. Making a training schedule for your trip ahead of time will both help you avoid the temptation of skipping the gym and increase the chances that you actually stick to your plan.

Mix things up

Think of traveling as a respite from your daily routine, which can be reflected in the workouts you do while traveling. Change up your workout by trying out a new routine with different amounts of cardio or strength training than usual, or work on muscles that you usually don’t think about. Utilize your time in a new place to try new-to-you ways of working out – you may just discover something new that you love to add into your routine once you’re home.

Short and sweet

Get in, get on it, and get out! One of the most significant hurdles for the active traveler to overcome is prioritizing workout out. Maybe you have a packed schedule during a business trip or you’re eager to explore your vacation destination to its fullest. The time you spend in the gym can reflect this. Restrict yourself to 45 minutes to an hour maximum in the gym, and then get out of there. You’ll feel much better for having gone to the gym, but not like you wasted a ton of valuable trip time on the treadmill.

Find the right gym beforehand

Saving the biggest challenge for last – the gyms themselves. One negative gym experience and your determination to exercise during your trip is gone.
